Keep Mold Away with These Simple Steps

by Matt Giove

Mold grows in damp places, so moisture control is the first step. Start by checking your home for leaks in the roof, pipes, or windows. Fixing leaks quickly helps stop mold from taking hold. Use exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen when you cook or shower. If you don’t have fans, open a window to let the air move. Keep surfaces dry, especially in areas like sinks, tubs, and basements. Wipe up any spills or puddles right away. Avoid leaving wet towels or clothes in piles. Mold can begin growing in just a day or two if conditions are right. Regular cleaning helps keep it from spreading unnoticed.

Dehumidifiers can help if your home feels damp. They work well in basements or rooms without much airflow. Keep indoor humidity below 60% if you can. You can buy a small humidity meter to check levels. If you see condensation on windows, it may be too humid inside. Dry wet clothes outside or in a dryer that vents outside. Don’t let water sit in trays under plants or refrigerators. Empty them out and wipe them clean. Store items in plastic bins instead of cardboard in damp areas. These small habits make it harder for mold to grow.

Some materials are more prone to mold than others. Carpets in damp places like basements can hold moisture. If a carpet gets soaked, it may need to be replaced. Keep furniture a few inches away from walls so air can move around. Check under sinks and behind appliances now and then. If you see black spots or smell something musty, it’s worth a closer look. Use soap and water to clean small areas, or call a professional if it’s widespread. Don’t paint over mold—clean it first. Air purifiers can also help if you have allergies or live in a humid area. Regular attention keeps mold from becoming a big issue.

Preventing mold is about staying aware of moisture in your space. You don’t need expensive tools to stay on top of it. Just take a few minutes each week to look for signs. Trust your nose—musty smells often mean mold is nearby. Drying things quickly makes a big difference. Good airflow helps, especially in places where moisture collects. Be patient with the process and stay consistent. Not every step will be needed all the time. But building these habits helps protect your home and health. A dry, clean space is easier to maintain in the long run.
